As students head back to school, pregnant and parenting students still face barriers to their right to equal educational opportunity. With the Trump administration’s ongoing dismantling of the Department of Education, and the failure of the Office for Civil Rights to resolve cases of pregnancy discrimination and other sex discrimination cases, state lawmakers and advocates from Texas to Minnesota have taken action to protect pregnant and parenting students’ rights to learn and thrive at school.
The Coalition for Pregnant and Parenting Students, co-led by the National Women’s Law Center, recently published a State Policy Toolkit for advocates and policymakers working to ensure pregnant, postpartum, and parenting students are supported in every stage of their educational journey. This briefing, co-hosted by NWLC’s State Gender Policy Collective, American Association of University Women, Justice + Joy National Collaborative, New America, The Pregnant Scholar, and UNITE-LA will provide an overview of the unique needs of pregnant and parenting students, walk participants through the toolkit’s resources, and feature state leaders who have successfully advanced these protections in their state.
